American photographer Larry Sultan (1946–2009) was a great conceptual artist who dealt with the dreams and desires of the US middle class, while examining, at the same time, the idyllic settings of his youth. This is what we find in his series “Pictures from Home”, while “In the Valley”, on the other hand, examines the locations utilized by the porn film industry in California’s San Fernando Valley where the photographer was raised. His last collection, entitled “Homeland”, focuses on the Mexicans who work in suburban shopping malls. A fairly critical (and yet loving) view of his native land and the (sometimes false) myths of American society.
